National Honors Society

National Honor Society members are chosen on the basis of leadership, scholarship, service and character. Students may apply for membership in the spring of the sophomore year. The society runs a tutoring service along with offering their services to various community groups. The society also plans social get-togethers each year for their members.

Membership in the National Honor Society begins with top grades in the students classes. Sophomores, juniors and seniors who have a 3.4 grade point average are eligible to apply. These students are then notified by mail and must submit personal information and include a letter of recommendation. If these items are not received by the deadline, students are disqualified for membership.

National membership standards identify leadership, service and character as additional requirements for membership. Leadership is determined by the students ability to relate to others and to organize and direct activities. Character is demonstrated by a students integrity, positive behavior and cooperation. Service is unpaid volunteer activity within and outside the school. Dow High staff will evaluate the qualities of your leadership, character, and service.

Selections begin in late February with an induction ceremony in late April.

Once in this club, at least five volunteer projects are required per semester. Projects such as blood drives, canned food drives, and more are completed by members of National Honors Society.
